The ratings are based a fair bit on nostalgia, because when you watch it years later, you can see how flawed it is, how awkward some of the characters are, how the entire show is actually very awkward in some ways, and how it often screams out that it's cheap and the creators didn't even try very hard. Yet the characters - especially the original ones - are just so close to my childhood that even now I'm not downright offended by the show, but it's definitely not the same anymore.

There's always some kid around the age of ten who for the first however many episodes won't much care that it's not about anything, that those actors give worse performances than he could, that each episode is more of the same, and that he actually has no clue as to the how, what, and why. But back then, it really had something.
