Alexander vit avec sa mère, Christiane, dans un appartement de Berlin-Est. Le jour du 40ème anniversaire de la RDA, celle-ci sombre dans le coma des suites d’un infarctus. Lorsqu’elle en sort huit mois plus tard, le mur est tombé, la ville est transformée. Mais pour protéger sa mère, dont le cœur affaibli ne pourrait supporter un tel choc, Alexander décide de lui cacher la vérité et, avec la complicité de son entourage, de recréer un environnement socialiste...
