It surprises me somewhat that during the early days of cinema, people didn't necessarily always need to be entertained by comedies or fantastical scenes. The Regeneration is a fairly gritty drama that accentuates death, alcoholism, and even domestic violence right from the first few minutes. It's about gangs, and I'm wondering if Martin Scorsese might have taken inspiration from here for his film Gangs of New York. The action scenes really reminded me of Scorsese's spectacle. Big, moving, powerful. A great film for its time.
