The events of the story take place in the outskirts of working class people in the early nineteen fifties. Makra, a skilled worker in a factory, suddenly comes to close quarters with everything around him because his environment condemns and ridicules him for protecting a woman when his drunk fellows were going to rape her after his bachelor party. He moves far away in a rented flat and meets the great loveof his life, Vali, a young intellectual. The girl wants to bring out Makra's artistic talent, and although they get very close to each other, she does not want to engage herself in a family life. Vali has to leave the country in 1956. Makra, now in marriage with his former bride, Magdus leads a quiet and secure family life, but his tuberculosis and his feeling of loneliness get worse and worse. When another woman in his life, the voluptuously provocative Sztanek refuses his proposition, Makra turns on the gas tap. (texte officiel du distributeur)
