Au XIIème siècle en Angleterre, la monarchie et le clergé entretiennent des rapports conflictuels. Lorsque l'archevêque de Canterbury meurt, le roi Henri II pense adoucir la situation en nommant son ami Thomas Becket pour reprendre la charge cléricale. Mais ce dernier, fidèle compagnon du roi jusqu'alors, se sent soudain investi par toutes les tâches qui lui incombent. Une opposition féroce voit donc le jour entre les deux hommes.
