Le richissime général Newton a fait don à la Galerie Grierson de cinquante millions de dollars pour rapatrier aux Etats-Unis le chef-d'oeuvre de la peinture américaine. Soucieux de donner le maximum de retentissement à cet évènement, les administrateurs invitent la Royal National Gallery de Londres à envoyer sur place leur meilleur spécialiste en la matière. Erreur fatale: les Anglais profitent de l'occasion pour expédier à Los Angeles leur employé le plus haï et le plus nul, dans l'espoir de s'en débarrasser. Son nom est Bean, Mr Bean. It's mainly individual gags that stand out, and the funniest ones were actually better on TV. I'm not saying it's not funny, but when you see this kind of thing more often, it does get a bit tiresome. This is what happened to me the third time I saw it. It's fine, but this comedy just isn't special. ()
We still have the (probably no longer working) original VHS at home, and I remember watching the film more than once back then. I went back to The Ultimate Disaster Movie some years after the last screening, and it was indeed a nostalgic return. Mr. Bean and his hijinks definitely work better in short sketches and with a minimum of words, no question about it, yet this film version it's a fun romp that references the original series in more than one place. I had the most fun with Bean's nighttime mission at the museum and his amateurish (but supremely effective) doctoring at the hospital. ()
