Il était une fois une jeune fille d'une grande beauté appelée Belle. Son père, un marchand ruiné, s'égare un soir dans la forêt et prend refuge dans un château lugubre. Le lendemain, le marchand cueille une rose dans le parc du château pour la rapporter à Belle. Mais il se fait surprendre par le maître des lieux, une Bête à l'aspect mi-humain mi-animal, qui le condamne à mort pour son geste. Belle renonce à sa liberté et accepte de vivre avec la Bête pour épargner son père. Elle va alors découvrir, au-delà de l'aspect terrifiant de la Bête, une âme pure dont elle tombe peu à peu amoureuse... (SND)

Beauty and the Beast, or a surreal trip into the world of fantasy framed by unusual contours. The visuals are absolutely captivating. What separates this film from the maximum is the fact that Beauty can be better as a Panna.

A beautiful adaptation of this classic fairy tale that blends the wonderful naivety of the story with a certain cruelty that humans carry within them. What's even more beautiful are Cocteau's visuals, especially the scenes in the castle, which are at times breathtakingly imaginative and jaw-dropping. Even if you know the story, perhaps in its Czech rendition, this old version will still captivate you.
