Hiver 1944. Dans Rome déclarée ville ouverte, se joue l'un des derniers drames de la Résistance italienne. L'ingénieur Giorgio Manfredi, traqué par les Allemands, se réfugie chez son ami Francesco typographe de la presse clandestine, qui est sur le point d'épouser une jeune veuve, Anna, mère d'un résistant en herbe. Anna met en contact Manfredi et le curé de la paroisse, Don Pietro qui accepte une mission périlleuse auprès des partisans : un transfert de fonds. Prévenus par Marina, la maîtresse de Manfredi (une danseuse de music-hall aliénée par la drogue), les Allemands cernent le quartier et capturent Francesco ainsi que quelques-uns de ses camarades. Ils seront bientôt libérés par d'autres patriotes, mais Anna est abattue. Don Pietro et Manfredi sont arrêtés par les SS. et interrogés par un colonel dont la cruauté polie confine au sadisme. Soumis à la torture, l'ingénieur garde le silence. Et meurt. Le prêtre est fusillé. (Films sans Frontières)

I guess I didn't even want to admit it, but neorealism has something to it. The camera capturing the events here is incredibly natural and doesn't shy away from moments that, even after so many years, still have something to say. Mainly because these are very emotive moments. The ending offers several of them, but the film is worth watching not just because of it. Italy has gotten on the horse. Especially cinematically.

Unfortunately, though I understand the mission of the movie, I still couldn't really get into it. Empty dialogue and images alternate with captivating and suspenseful scenes, all of which leaves you feeling strongly conflicted after watching. It would be unfair to give a percentage rating to a film whose objective was to "show," but for me, this time it is only better than 50%. If I have the opportunity, I will gladly give it a second chance, but for now, I am not finding common ground with Roberto Rossellini.
