1970, Californie. Une communauté hippie est massacrée par Damon et les membres de sa secte. Vingt-et-un ans plus tard, Francfort. Tandis que des crimes rituels attribués à la secte des Sans-Visage ponctuent l’actualité, Miriam Kreisl, jeune institutrice, manque de renverser un vieillard au comportement étrange. S’il refuse de se faire soigner, il accepte en revanche de se reposer quelques heures chez elle. Curieusement, Moebius semble connaître la maison et fait part à Miriam d’une mystérieuse destinée. Bientôt, des faits étranges et sanglants se produisent dans l’entourage de la jeune femme. (Le Chat qui Fume)

Very unsettling, really (the moment bugs start crawling into somebody’s body orifices, the gloves are off!), and atmospheric and disgusting at times, but as a whole, it looks terribly choppy, incoherent and unfocused. Disappointment.

The Sect suffers from the shortcoming that Michele Soavi wanted to make a really big film that would be truly terrifying and would reference the atmosphere of classic Italian films in terms of their horror. However, he failed to build on Bava because the film just doesn't work as a whole. It crumbles in the hands of the creators in many parts, which individually come out quite well, but together they are too shapeless. The film won't blow you away, which is a shame because there was definitely potential here.
