1868. Le taciturne Howard Kemp se lance à la recherche du meurtrier Ben Vandergroat, espérant empocher une prime alléchante. Dans une nature rocailleuse, il fait la rencontre de deux hommes à la moralité douteuse, qui l’accompagnent dans sa quête. Minimal gunfights, minimal action, lots of conversation, and only a few actors. Yet Anthony Mann directed one of the best westerns (or at least one that easily ranks among the best) because he understood that even a western can be about people and that it will work with them. James Stewart is excellent in the role of the unpleasant guy, which I wouldn't have believed before seeing the film.
