Fin XIXème, Joseph Ferdinand Cheval (Jacques Gamblin), est un simple facteur qui parcourt chaque jour la Drôme, de village en village. Solitaire, il est bouleversé quand il rencontre la femme de sa vie, Philomène (Laetitia Casta). De leur union naît Alice. Pour cette enfant qu’il aime plus que tout, Cheval se jette alors dans un pari fou : lui construire de ses propres mains, un incroyable palais. Jamais épargné par les épreuves de la vie, cet homme ordinaire n’abandonnera pas et consacrera 33 ans à bâtir une œuvre extraordinaire : « Le Palais idéal ». (SND)

A fascinating story that truly deserved to be brought to the screen. I had no idea about this tale, so the film definitely hit the mark for me. Right after watching, I found myself researching where this Ideal Palace is located, and it’s now on my list of places to visit if I ever get the chance to travel again. The film is meticulously told, with Jacques Gamblin delivering an outstanding performance as the self-absorbed Ferdinand Cheval. However, despite Cheval’s complex character, the film portrays him rather simply, which is my only critique of an otherwise captivating story from France.
