The premise of The Banker definitely grabs attention, but the fact that it’s mostly floating around the three-star mark in reviews tells you a lot—it’s another middle-of-the-road Hollywood story. Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, and Nicholas Hoult make for a solid cast, but at times, it all just feels like it's running on autopilot. Solid performances, sure, but overall, the film leans heavily into being a predictable, routine experience. ()
Entertaining, funny, playful, here and there informative and even truthful, with bits of reality, but in every angle as cinematically polished as possible. A must-see for people in the industry, for others it will be a weekend treat that won't offend and, except for a few delicious passages with Samuel L Jackson, probably won't even completely delight. We can expect some interesting and ambitious stuff from Apple production in the future, and Banker certainly didn't disgrace them in any way. ()
