Les Professionnels (1966)

anglais A pretty decent western for three and a half stars, which I'm rounding up purely out of the mood of the moment. The superbly cast title foursome trudge across the desert to rescue (?) one really beautiful wife of one really rich man, and you almost feels like you’re on the heated journey with them. The characters quickly grow on the viewer and it is a pleasure to watch them and at the same time listen to them tease each other. It's a pity that the film is so long - after an hour and a half it felt drawn out and not nearly as interesting as in the first hour. A few minutes of boredom later, however, we come to the final shootout between two old friends, in which words and thoughts are very important in addition to guns, which I liked. Maurice Jarre's music should also be praised.

Le Secret du rapport Quiller (1966)

anglais A very good spy-thriller affair with skillful direction by Anderson, a likeable Segal, incredibly sleazy Sydow and Guinness and pretty Senta Berger. The Quiller Memorandum has pace and swing, the story lacks nothing, the script is clever and full of intelligent (!) dialogue, the atmosphere of the film is more than spiced up by Barry's music... The great interrogation scene, the drive in that beautiful red Porsche and the pleasantly ambiguous ending are the most memorable.

Red Dead Redemption: The Man from Blackwater (2010)

anglais I had a few problems with this short not related to the game. Firstly, it is too long (a painful half hour), it is not particularly well animated (well, a PC game is a PC game) and the unentertaining story could be called "the most famous western clichés in one" without exaggeration. But if I knew the game, I might have a different opinion. Since i don’t, I can say I liked the music, some of the shots and.... What else? Not much beyond that.

Légion - L'armée des anges (2010)

anglais I'm rounding down two and a half stars. You have to agree with a lot of opinions about this film - the dialogue is terrible and the plot is a bit of a mess, lacking logic (what the hell have we done to anger this god so much?). Those are the two main downsides. Otherwise, you could say that Legion looks like a cross between Dogma, The Terminator and Constantine, while it would like to be funny like the first, action-apocalyptic like the second and entertaining like the third. But it's not good at any of it. And that is too bad. I liked the scenes like "clouds rolling into the gas station", "the old lady" and "the ice cream man" and then the almost final angel fight. Much of the atmosphere was created by the music of John Frizzell (I'll have to find out who that is right away). If you're going to watch Legion, expect only a relaxing film. Then you probably won't give it a Boo! and the hour and a half will probably pass quickly.

Únos (1952)

anglais Kidnapped amounts to a bunch of nonsense. It is shot quite skillfully (a pity to waste such directors for films of this kind), but that doesn't save it from criticism. In the story you will find everything you would expect - cunning imperialists in the form of a pair of plump men smoking Havana, a heroic comrade who is not only not easy to break, but actually impossible to break, a hesitant engineer who won't betray his friends anyway, and an even more hesitant jazzman who at first falls for the American devil, but when he wants to change his mind at the right time, it's too late. Of course, we also get the singing of the Internationale at the most difficult moment, speeches about miners, factories, the people who stand behind every good comrade, the final exuberant dance and so on... I give one (red) star for the direction of (some!) scenes (the hijacking of the plane, the landing in Germany) and for the music by Jiří Šust. That's all.__P.S. Poor Miloš Kopecký.

Soyez sympas, rembobinez (2008)

anglais I was incredibly entertained by the film from the very beginning and by about halfway through I was firmly convinced that I would give it four stars. However, the ending, which is truly beautiful and moving in a way that perhaps only Gondry can achieve, convinced me of the fifth star. That's all.

Papillon (1973)

anglais This breathtaking film about the (un)freedom of man and his mind cleverly took perhaps not the best, but certainly the most attractive passages from Charrière's novel and made them unforgettable. Even the arrival at the camp (yes, like the guillotine scene) leaves no one in any doubt that Devil’s Islands is truly evil, and what happens over the next two hours only underscores everything. The claustrophobic "solitary confinement" scene, which I dreamt about for a couple of nights, the failed escape attempts that only increase Papillon's desire for freedom, the heart attack finale... And many others. The film is great thanks to the McQueen-Hoffman duo, Schaffner's oppressive direction and, of course, Jerry Goldsmith's pleasantly melancholic score. Five stars and never less.

À couteaux tirés (1997)

anglais A very fine film starring Hopkins, Baldwin, a bear, a haunting score by Jerry Goldsmith and Alaska.

L'Imaginarium du docteur Parnassus (2009)

anglais Five stars, that’s all there is to it. It's rare to see something like this in my commentary, but: A person who was bored by The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, disappointed by it, or bored and disappointed together, simply has no imagination, can't think about the film and doesn't want to dream. There. Imaginarium is great - every second, every shot, it oozes typical Gilliam, whose magical world I could recognize even blindly. It's commonplace that this American Python doesn't miss the mark even when choosing actors - here he hit the mark again. Several times. Ledger, Depp, Law and Farrell were all great. A charming Lily Cole, and Christopher Plummer, who has no problem looking homeless in one shot and like a dignified magician in the next... And last but not least, Tom Waits, one of the best devils of the film world. I applaud you all. And I wish Terry Gilliam would never stop telling stories (we know how important that is for the world, don't we?).__P.S. The released DVD offers (by today's lousy standards) an unprecedented portion of interesting bonus features. But the radio interview with Heath Ledger ("I'm going to finish shooting the new Terry Gilliam movie in three weeks") made me feel pretty damn anxious.

Zack et Miri font un porno (2008)

anglais No one could have mixed this mixture of porn, sharp and even sharper humor, pop culture references and romance better than Kevin Smith. Zack and Miri has a little bit of everything and that's a good thing. Highlights include a Star Wars porn parody, a scene with a guy who comes to get coffee even though the diner has long since closed, and a reunion of high school seniors years later. It's a pity that the film ends with a typical romantic cliché, but even Smith can't avoid that. Zack and Miri gets four stars from me because it entertained and (except for one disgusting thing - I simply hate fecal humor) didn't offend.
