Many people like music. But not everyone who likes music is a prompter at the Opera. Actually, very few are. She is The Prompter. Her life consists of a box on the floor of the opera stage. Siv has never taken up much space. Siv marries Fred. She moves into his house. A home dominated by his ex-wifes possessions, his children, and his habits. She doesn't find much room at Freds either. Freds ex-wife returns home. In a wheelchair. One day Siv is left standing on the street with a tuba someone has left behind. She struggles with the size of the instrument case. The Prompter is a sad yet cheerful story about an opera prompters life both at work and at home. The story encounters situations with which we all can identify. At the same time we sense the prompters presence during the powerful scenes from Verdis Aida. A parallel story of sorts to her own confined reality. (Norsk Filminstitutt)
